from SL: I am very fortunate and thankful to work with ecoVegan and the jobs I do here; sometimes situation can be tough and not expected, and I am grateful for every opportunity that's given to me for me to learn and grow and be a better person and do better things for the world! Thanks again for everyone that's been part of us! <3 <3 <3
this is what I posted on facebook, and this is truly how I feel about it too!
these days I feel very grateful for all the people around me, family & friends, lover & coworker, our supplier & customers... everything seems to be well (ok.. that's a bit optimistic..., but at least it somehow feels that way, I am just positive thinking like that!!) and have realistic and optimistic goals and out look! I am happy, and more that I am thankful!
Thank you God & angels, thank you all who's there to support and watch and encourage us, I know one day soon we will have world vegan & world peace, and that's truly what I seek. May that one day come very soon!
Just a little being doing something that I believe is right, and hope to contribute to the positiveness in the society and bring more peace and harmony!

Has it been a month?
oh wow.. so unbelievable that I have not blogged for a month; perhaps these days are just a bit too crazy. First there was the Portland VegFest which we had a blast, and then SF's World Veg Fest; these two results the ecoVegan experience- Veg Festivals with ecoVegan; all I can say is our peeps did a great job!!
Then visiting the factory (as well as family) in Taiwan for a week; before I even unpacked, I was already on the road to East Coast visiting my buddies and NYC (must say the skyline is just beautiful) and we are lucky that a week after we are gone, east coast got some serious snowstorm... hope everyone there is ok!
Container will be coming soon while we will be busy prepping for Green Festival (come visit us in the organic food section)! It's a eventful two months!! and shhh, new products will be coming soon too!! <3 <3 <3

He Lives In You
Currently Listening to Lion King's "He Lives In You"
Such an encouraging song!
"He" is the spirit that we all have, that's our highest and most admirable self that one day we will be; and if we just continue to look within and find the enlightened self, we will forever live fulfilling and with happiness.

blogging is not a personal thing, or at least I am not sure
in the beginning, I thought I would have a lot more thoughts to share;
at this time, I feel I am either too much into the tasks that I am not able to draw myself out to express the "public" feelings, or more like what I used to do presentation to the executives that I need to use simple and commonly-understood vocabulary .
you ask me, what are my thoughts? of course I have my own opinion and comments! Though when asking someone who is too deep into the situation is not a clever idea to get the big and clear picture that everyone wants to see; moreover; I don't think people really care as much as the detail they just all want to hear the happy news.
Am I bitter, possible; am i hard-working, yes; am i idealist and futurist, definitely. I guess being my own heritage, we just walk the walk instead of talk the walk lol

Inventory Control- the real thing
Fun or Not
It's a delicate process to ensure that what we have on hand actually matches what it says what we have on hand.
No wonder others take 2-3 days off just to do this! We gotta keep up with this good practice!

Shelf Life
I am actually not sure what I think right now.
The shelf life itself is an art, just like dealing with people. When dealing with people there's emotion, you can reason them, or use different kind of tactics to get the things you want; when dealing with shelf life, since it's so black and white, I am actually not sure what can be done....
Recommendation from my mentor:
- get the manufacturer to look into extending the shelf life
- negotiate with the distributor for shorter maximum shelf life requirement
- anything else creative?

corporate sponsorship, works or not?
honestly, I really don't know.
I think maybe it's at certain stage that the corporate sponsorship makes more sense, which is when the company is big and sustainable and they want to be seen doing good stuff.
though, i know our friends from the industry such as tofurky and field roast also does a lot of food give-away/sponsor for non-profit and vegan organizations, which I definitely applaud.
we support, and we also appreciate other people's support to us, when it all makes sense.

something is wrong, but i don't know what it is
My staff called me again today, and from the conversation i can feel she is worried, but i am not sure what it is.. could it be because we are signing a broker and she feels insecure? or things are moving too slow?
I wonder. and hopefully i will be able to figure out to keep things running smoothly too

International Trade
I wonder, if it's really because the veg message is really getting out there; all of a sudden we are getting a lot international inquiries.. (or is it because of Alibaba?)
Are they real or are they scam?
and now I have to deal with international trades.. while we are still expanding the domestic.. but why not? the more the merrier!

I have been away
For a while, mostly because we were moving our warehouse to a new location, still in SOMA, but a bigger one (woohoo for more freezer space, more freezer works lol); and then I took a very vegan trip haha to visit the Loving Huts in Austria and Czech... and have just finally returned.
It's like keeping my journal (the handwritten one), I have had it for more than 15 years, but this year I am slowing down.. it's either because i don't hand write much any more except when i am on the road and like to write postcards, or it's because things are moving too fast that I just can't keep up with recording them if i miss one day or two..
things do move fast i have to say; but during this trip, or after i have returned, I felt a disconnect. It's the type of disconnect that I actually enjoy and think it's good to have. There was minimal internet and/or phone on the trip, so I don't have to worry about things and could just enjoy the present.
I guess the point is, i will try to share as much as I can, and for those who care! Cheers =D

Online special to celebrate Mother's Day!
It took us so long.. much longer than I have expected to have this online store ready; when in fact it really only took about less than a day to setup and to test. I guess with all the other details that needed to be taken care of, and with the old sayings "good things are worth the wait" ha, ha, ha.
Now besides mother's day special, we are also able to ship directly too! This is to promote the products for people who are much further away and that we don't have retail presence yet; hopefully this will work well to let the general public gain awareness and also share with their local grocery stores and friends!
Wish us luck!

I was called to get things done
Not to just be nice and be friends.
I guess that's somehow my dilemma.. .
To me, this is a journey that I am walking through, to do things with the intention of love and to wake up the good natural of the public, while I believe the best way is to role model that myself... Big big big lesson!

Dealing with People who are not professional
So I asked a more senior friend of mine the past weekend, when this vendor of ours called me once "hey girl, how are you doing"
He replied, just reply addressing him "boy"
I thought that was funny and ridiculous, and so true!!!!!
So I did today, and apparently this guy was a bit shocked so he replied, "I am a guy"
I should have said yeah, then act like a guy not like a boy
No, cannot do that... because we are dealing with businesses, we are dealing with people, dealing with people who have emotion (but no brain)... so here you go, i hope this will not happen again

what does our financial statement look like?
Honestly, I admit we are (or I am) way behind in doing our financial projection for year 2011. But hey, rather late than never!
And how can I have negative inventories?? So tricky!!

Stores
It's a long process to get into stores and have people get notified of the products.
There are lots of marketing needed to be done, including demo, flyers, coupon, community support, facebook, newsletter, twitter, ads, etc etc etc
We are doing the best we can; for the local Northern California market I think we are on a somewhat steady but not fast enough expansion; however in the Southern California I am a bit more concerned since that market is literally on hold or slowly dying because the stores do not want to reorder. I am positive that our products will sell, it's just the matter of how we proceed, and how we proceed correctly and sustainably.
Well, will just continue to try...

Dealing with FedEx or any customer service people
Tips
1. Call anddemand request what you want
2. If they don't give you what you want, hang up and dial again
3. Repeat until you get your desirable results
I know it might take longer than expected, but trust me, not everyone know what they are doing; and most of the time they cannot actually resolve your issues of concerns. So when i run into people who can actually get any requests done, I totally appreciate them!
just my little ranting, that's it! lol
2011-04-19
And guess what, this new friend of mine Doug (who is a talented singer with amazing crystal clear voice) had the following suggestion. Isn't him just somewhere up there??!!
1) Call and REQUEST what you want.
2) If they don't give you what you want, make certain the problem is not with the information you gave them. If it is not, then
3) Take your business where they have people who respect you.
Just a thought. :)
Thanks Doug =D

Decision, decision, decision!
A new friend I met at the ExpoWest (who had been vegan for a while and been volunteering and active in the community) has just decided to go back to meat and dairy, which is a little sad (or a lot) because.. I guess because I feel one less comrade.. I remember how we had a good time chatting about different vegan events, etc.
I understand it's all personal choice (health, or what not), and I wish all the good luck; and return to the more compassion and sustainable way very soon too! God bless.

We are in the process of moving!
It has been a busy several weeks already because of the
demo at Falletti Store
PLAYgreen Festival in Berkeley
ExpoWest in Anaheim
And after we came back, besides catching up, we have to move now; I guess life is just a non-stop happening!
We will be busy!
At first I was trying to avoid the topic because I do'nt know where to start; thanks to Sone she breaks down the tasks (without moving an office before!) so we can think more chronologically!
All I can say is, I am grateful for the people around to help get things moving!
I never doubt that God send Angels to help! Thank you all!

Retail is a war- read at your own risk!
Why do I say that?
After about half a year we have the products available in the market, I still struggle (if I must say), or have challenges to get into more retail stores (not even mention about more marketing to let the consumers know)
Here's the trick part:
1. The retailers are hesitate to take new products because they are unsure how it will sell (or it's not a guarantee sell)
2. The retailers want to take products mostly only from distributors because it's easier to just pay 1 invoice
3. The retailers expect the demo, price discount, coupon, in-store flyer, etc marketing to promote the products to help sell through (which is understandable)
4. The distributor are even more hesitate to take products from a new vendor because they are unsure how many retailers are (really) interested
5. The distributor and retailers are concerned about the shelf life (good thing our products have long shelf life) and returns
6. The distributor expect even more of the marketing (ad calendar) tools to get the retailers to buy
7. The distributor expect a big margin... plus the big one demand to use a broker as sales person so they are sure the products will be sold to the retailers.
8. The brokers should represent us, however they also represent many products, and could build up the costs before cash flow even comes in.
9. And that is not the end; with big distributors the manufacturers are expected to have at least 9 months of cash flow ready before going into them and before getting paid off.
10. All these will take a big chunk of the retail price consumer pay to get the products, leaving the manufacturer little margin.. so it's definitely a state of art to get it done!
Tricky, tricky, tricky... !! There is no short cut, and we will just have to fight this retail war!
I guess that will require good strategy, steady cash flow, persistent, and many more communication, marketing, etc to get it right!! Wish us good luck!!

ecoVegan and Field Roast!
Ani the Raw Chef & Author, Bob from Go Vegan Radio, and ecoVegan
Just me at the booth!
At FreeSoul Caffe; they have organic coffee and tea, being not a coffee person, I prefer their waffle below!
Wow, great green tea waffle! Must try!
My attempt to cook blissful bits!
I actually didn't know that when soy is cooked with mushroom, it will give less filling feeling! I spent about 10 minutes in front of Whole Foods Market's vegetable section and thought hard what to cook with Blissful Bits! Well, I enjoyed it, and people enjoyed it, so that's good!
- slice a whole organic onion, stir fry with some sesame oil, and take out to cool
- wash and cut in half of mushroom (half lbs), slightly heat, and take out to cool
- tear two bags of Blissful Bits and cut in half for each bits (or one bag in this case is enough), add water and heat for 1 minute, and add onion and mushroom and some pepper, stir fry together
- sprinkle some oregano or fresh greens on top, enjoy =D
By the way, did you see vegan.com's review for Blissful Bits? Here's a brief
"In the mock meat category, I really enjoyed ecoVegan’s Blissful Bits and will certainly use them in a stir fry or on skewers next time I need to blow away an omnivorous friend. "

I wouldn't say it's a nightmare.. though it is a lot of work to get it right!
interestingly I also did this years back and also for another organization; just more things to learn (and prettier to look at now too!)
Stay tuned!
Minor changes only- good quality of work is built up by all the details!!

Look at these hippies!! What a great group of people who also believe a veggie lifestyle! I wonder (or I still don't know why) people think I am a hippie too!
Question 1 to ask: Are you a vegetarian
Question 2 to ask: Are you an environmentalist
Okok... I guess that determines it!
I hope one day many will also share our mission too!

Berkeley Vegan Earth Day, April 22, 2011
Wow, First ever, Berkeley's own Vegan Earth Day!
Hey I think it's about time too!
Originally I had some reservation for becoming the sponsor, later I thought, if this is gonna be the first one, we vegans must support it so "vegan earth day" will be a future growing trend to show the awareness to the public too!
It might be small; once again, any small steps will leap into a big change.
When Armstrong landed the moon, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
Congratulations and Thanks to Karine Brighten Events for putting together a Vegan Earth Day!

Why Veg, or better yet, why Vegan?
When Chris started mentoring for me and the business, he mentioned our products are great and delicious, but why Vegan? Why not vegetarian because there is a bigger population?
I replied, because vegetarian (either lacto or ovo) still consumes from animals, might not be directly but the action still encourages the idea of profitable business for raising cattle for milk (and what to do with all the meat after milk is gone... there you go!) or for eggs (where to get all the eggs, all that many eggs??) The answer is obvious.
For someone to be able to say they are animal lover, the environmental conscious activist, or to have some sympathy, one shall never eat or use or touch anything that relates to animal cruelty, period.
Office Hours
Would you be interested in ecoVegan or myself's office hours? Although I am nobody important, I would still be curious to know what people would like to know about ecoVegan!

The Art of CRM
The Art of CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
I must say, this tool is pretty powerful, if given the right way of usage, if it weren't so hard to understand. Honestly, for someone not coming from business world, I had a hard time understanding the differences between
- Prospect
- Lead
- Potential
Maybe I should and could wiki it; but reading is not my strength so instead I ask :p
- Prospect: (according to Wiki) marketing term for potential customers.. then what's the difference between that and potential?
- Lead: (according to Wiki) identity of human or entity that's interested in purchasing.. then what's the difference between that and potential?
- Potential: (accordingly to Wiki) i could not find anything.. from my discussion with my colleague it is the actual stages that a prospect has been converted to a lead (meaning contacted and relationship established) and there is more than 0% chance they are interested.
Honestly, if someone can explain further to me, I'd appreciate that! Thank you =D

What were you doing 42 years ago?
For me, I wasn't even born yet!!
For Eden Foods, they started 42 years ago, and so were many other business; this business thing is a long term journey (so is PhD), we must endure our strength and keep a positive energy to go far and reach our goals!

FDA inspection & tips
Wow! Finally.. It's been almost 3 weeks since the container arrived and everyday we are waiting for the FDA hold to be released but not getting status; now we are finally moving somewhere, and here's my tips
1. Have a great (good is not enough) relationship with your forwarder, and make sure their broker has an outstanding relationship with the FDA
- Why? Because they will be able to do something, trust me.
2. Make sure your shipper send you everything; literally E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G that's ever needed (or not needed) for the documents; including but not limited to (* indicates important!)
- invoice*
- packing list*
- product ingredient*
- airway bills/ bill of lading
- photos of the products
- photos of the product packaging/ labels (if not yet available)
3. Follow up with your contact (whether it's forwarder, broker, FDA, and your customers) everyday to let them know you care and want to solve this issue together in a timely and professionally and politely manner
4. Know your products well, so when FDA calls you and ask you questions you are able to answer them in a soundly matter and seems legit.
5. Sit, Relax, and Pray. Once it's in the lands of FDA or USDA hold, there determines almost nothing you can do or know until FDA contacts you to either release the hold, or do physical inspection, or more. During this time there is absolutely no information provided such as what to expect or when to expect; so just live everyday as you would!
That's it, I hope this helps!

Can you find the duck?
We have a special duck, and I am so tempted to give it a special name!
You have seen it on the business card, on the website, on the brochure, on the postcard, on the packaging, and we should have a game name: "Can you find the duck?" hahaha
I don't know why i think it's funny; I just think it's cute!
